Rómulo Celdrán

Rómulo Celdrán

Rómulo Celdrán is a visual artist who stands out for his mastery of detail in service of his profound capacity for reflection on art. His technical precision materializes a sublime exploration of light, volume, and texture, creating pieces that invite contemplation of the represented object and question whether the value of these works lies in how (formal) they are made or in why (conceptual) they are made. Rómulo proposes that thanks not only to the 'what', but also to the 'how' and the 'why', an object from our daily life, when decontextualized, can be transformed into an extraordinary artistic object of greater value than if one were only concerned with the 'why', that is, decontextualizing the object (the 'what') without further concern for its formal presentation. This theoretical reflection leads to the inevitable logical conclusion that the formal (the 'how') adds value to the artistic object and therefore, his work denies the thesis that the idea (the 'why') is the only important thing, separating himself and reflecting negatively on the prevailing current of artistic philosophy that governs art today.

Blossoming

In times of hypertechnology and Artificial Intelligence, Blossoming is something of a tribute to Nature and natural beauty. A reminder of our condition as natural beings and our dialogue with Nature as observers. Flowers are much more than decorative natural objects; they are elements through which Nature expands and perpetuates itself. A perfect machinery of attraction and functionality dedicated to the replication of life. Humanity has felt a historical fascination for their beauty and diversity, making them part of their domestic environment, their rituals, their scientific interest, their romantic interactions, … With Blossoming, I try to build a new and committed gaze towards these marvelous natural objects with the sole intention of admiring their beauty, their mathematical patterns, the delicate structure of their parts, and to try to overcome their more traditional and decorative connotations.

Digital Tenebrism

My Digital Tenebrism series is, above all, a tribute and a demonstration of my admiration for Baroque tenebrism and its representatives. But also an attempt to bring it to our time in an effort to speak about the timelessness of these scenes. Logically, there are changes. The protagonists, their attire, and their presence are recognizably contemporary. The spotlight illuminating the scene is no longer a small window, or a candle or oil lamp, but a mobile device that the characters consult in the darkness of their domestic space. But apart from these small details that provide the recognizably current character of the images, their spirit of contemplation and mystery remains immutable over the centuries. Something like an attempt to focus on the immutable nature of the Human Condition beyond historical episodes or technological developments.

Zoom

Zoom resizes the object, enhances its presence, and invites us to explore it, discovering hidden spaces and unnoticed corners. It breaks the physical laws that govern our logic as observers and confronts us with a world that grows, with the same consequences as if we were Shrinking Men strolling through a reality of useless objects for their intended use, due to their inadequate size when they exist on a scale that is no longer human.

Solid

The hand is, probably, one of the oldest and most universal symbols of Humanity. As soon as I started thinking about this project, the prehistoric handprints painted in caves in many parts of the world, from France to Argentina or Borneo, came to mind. Some of them dated over 30,000 years old. The surprising thing about these handprints is that they are a clear way of creating an extremely recognizable symbol of human presence. Whether they are a signature or a deliberate attempt to communicate with others, these handprints represent the most direct and evident way of saying: "I am human and I was here". My series Solid, incorporates 3D digital scanning technology, with the intention of bringing to our time one of the earliest, most universal, and powerfully beautiful communication elements in the History of Humanity.

Smoke

Smoke as an object is the starting point of this series. But it is much more than that. The fluidity and ephemeral condition of smoke invite us to observe its hypnotic dance while preventing us from a detailed observation of its structures and architecture. The Smoke series captures the entropy of this complex system for a fraction of a second, giving us the opportunity to catch a glimpse before it continues its endless evolution.

Hi-res

HI-RES is the title of a series of works that, from the fields of sculpture and painting, explore visible reality through the lens of analysis offered by computer-generated 3D models. This series attempts to delve into the relationships between the artistic object that uses visible reality as a reference, and the boundaries of verisimilitude between observable reality, art, and science. With HI-RES, I try to highlight my total fascination with this 3D virtual world, its analytical capacity and its plasticity, and I intend to use it as a valid reference for pictorial and sculptural creation, sublimating its visual qualities beyond its obvious technical functionalities.

Macro

Macro acts as a camera lens that adjusts the scale of measurement with which we perceive what we are looking at. It breaks the correspondence between the real size of the object and the size at which we perceive it according to the distance separating us from it. It acts like the traditional magnifying glass that brings us closer to the object worthy of observation, even when we maintain the appropriate distance to observe it.
