Armando Rabadan

Armando Rabadan

Spanish visual artist, highly influenced by purism, he uses geographical themes mixed with the simplistic beauty of Japanese origami. His attractively modern works appear to have a healthy, three-dimensional texture, although they are actually completely flat on the canvas. His "preferred medium of spray, oil, and acrylic on canvas" along with computer sketching allows Rabadán to achieve the unique effect of his earthy and conceptual pieces. He has developed his career by undertaking residencies in France and most recently in the United Kingdom, and has had a presence in international emerging art fairs such as Context Miami or Contemporary Istanbul, appearing at the ARCO fair in 2024, as a main national presence.

Paper

In one of my main series, I paint with oil on Fabriano paper. I am particularly interested in paper for the nobility of its material: its texture, its absorbency, and its history connect it to the ancient, to the archaic, to papyrus and tapestry. It is a support that not only offers exceptional quality but also allows for a very versatile presentation. It can be left loose, hung as a floating tapestry, or framed with glass, where it acquires a sober and elegant presence. Paper, far from being a secondary support, is for me a first-line method, a living surface that breathes with the painting.

Linen

Linen is a regular material in my practice, and one of the great classics of painting. I am interested in its stability, its resistance to the passage of time, and the way it dialogues with tradition. It is a support that has accompanied the great masters, and that continues to work today due to its solidity and sober character. Painting on linen is working with a surface that has memory, that retains something of the old craft, but that also allows for total freedom in contemporary expression.
