Unique work
This piece was created for an exhibition in Melbourne at LINDEN NEW ART. Artists from both Europe and Australia participated, and we were asked to talk about the idea of moving to another country to seek new opportunities. For Alejandra, it represents strength and adventure; it is rupture and surprise. Driven by these feelings, she created New Game. A new beginning in a foreign country, with Contemporary Art being a sector that is not at all easy but at the same time so passionate. The painting depicts two halves of a golf ball. Firstly, the golf ball was chosen because it represents strength, how hard you have to hit a solid ball to break it. Secondly, for the surprise, she believes it is surprising to manage to break it because few people know what is inside a golf ball and the different colors you can find in the filling. For Alejandra, it somehow represents Australia, meaning that one of the things that surprised her most about Australia was that golf there was more normalized than in Spain, where it is a game for people with higher purchasing power. These small details between what is normal or not in each country are what fascinate her most about traveling and meeting people from other parts of the world because you always question the concept of "normal.". Like art in all its forms, she believes it has that point of showing what is "abnormal" in the reality of each artist, and she considers that working with European artists in Australia has that point of culture shock that the artist finds so interesting. That's why she considered that this golf ball game represented everything that embarking on a new path and seeking new opportunities outside one's environment, in this case, one's country and continent, meant to her.

Alejandra de la Torre

Artist Alejandra de la Torre investigates in her work the attachment people feel towards objects, why we need to accumulate possessions, and where the limits lie between what is considered normal and what can become an obsession. Starting from the particularity of objects, she makes a broader reflection on everyday acts related to different forms and motives of accumulation, from preserving memories to others like collecting. De la Torre combines painting with other techniques such as drawing, screen printing, transfer, and even the presence of physical objects.
