Unique work
"I couldn't save all the works; it would have been a miracle. Even so, some of them remained in good condition. I analyzed them and recorded their damage. My intention was to create a report for each work on its conservation status with corresponding damage maps (due to infrastructure, time, and hierarchy of needs, I finally discarded this option). I also had to accept that it was not in my power to restore them all, and that, moreover, not all of them could be completely restored under the conditions we were living in. I decided to do something different with them. I reflected until I reached the expected conclusion: art is in continuous transformation, just as we are, and art, as a way of life, is a record of what happens. I was undergoing a paradigm shift, a new reality, an emotional state of fracture and recomposition. Perhaps I should create a work from the fragments in good condition, from the "good" that remained to me, cut my losses and rebuild, as we constantly do in our lives (or so we tell ourselves). It would be a work that would represent me completely up to the present, not just visually. It would be composed of pieces from all periods of my career up to that point. It would be a unique piece that would materialize my way of facing life and transform the reconstruction of my being into a palpable and observable object. The fragments I had to discard had been covered by different multicellular microorganisms (with abrupt temperature changes, the dormant spores could reactivate even after cleaning) or, conversely, the pictorial support had suffered deformation. I gathered my courage and various saws, and began to assemble to build something beautiful from an adverse event. This piece was exhibited at the Chirivella Soriano Foundation on the occasion of the exhibition "After Dana, Poetics of Resilience," and its production was partly subsidized by the Foundation."

Gemma Alpuente

Gemma Alpuente (Algemesí, 1993) is a visual artist whose practice is based on experimentation, process, and material research. Her work combines intuition and method to develop her own language that translates gesture and color into volume through a direct relationship with matter. She holds a degree in Fine Arts and in Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage from the Faculty of San Carlos (UPV), and a master's degree in Artistic Education from the University of Valencia. She has developed her career in the national and international art circuit. Her work is part of public and private collections (foundations and individuals) in Spain, Europe, and Asia. She has collaborated with galleries such as Galería Shiras, Galeria Cuatro, SGA, Untitled Gallery, Saisho, and Canal Gallery, with whom she participated in the Art Madrid fair in 2025, being highlighted by Cultura Inquieta and this 2026 with LAVIO (Murcia-Shanghai), being selected for the curated tour by Marisol Salanova. In recent years, she has received several national awards, including the Alhambra Prize at Abierto Valencia, with her retrospective Squeeze which marked a key point in her public projection. After being affected by the Dana, she has appeared in media such as Vogue, RTVE, Cadena Ser, Contemporary LYNX; she has participated in conferences at the UPV and shown her reconstructed work in spaces such as La Fundación Chirivella Soriano or the CCCC. She is considered one of the 25 Spanish visual artists under 35 with the most projection by El Confidencial (Vanitatis). Her latest project has been to create a large-scale mural for the Valencia CF Urban Art Route, alongside artists such as Felipe Pantone, Mawe, or La Nena Wapa.
