Jorge Gallego

Jorge Gallego develops a rigorous pictorial practice focused on experimentation with the perception of space, light, and geometry, where the representation of landscape acquires an almost abstract dimension. His work is based on a meticulous technical process that combines traditional procedures with a contemporary exploration of the image, resulting in compositions of high formal precision and atmospheres of great subtlety. Through a restrained palette and an almost material treatment of color, Gallego generates scenes of apparent serenity that, nevertheless, activate a latent tension between the real and the constructed. The quality of his work lies in his ability to transcend mimesis, transforming the landscape into a mental and symbolic space, and demonstrating an uncommon plastic maturity, supported by a deep knowledge of the medium and a constant desire for formal refinement.

ON GEOMETRY

In his most recent series, Jorge Gallego analyzes the geometry imposed by humans on the landscape. Based on models he built himself, he generates compositions that do not represent real places, but invented, hybrid, or possible spaces. These works move away from the documentary and approach the essential: concrete structures, purified forms, and silent atmospheres. More than landscapes, Gallego conceives them as architectural still lifes, where the rational becomes a symbol of the present.

THE EPHEMERAL AND THE MYSTERY

In this series, Jorge Gallego explores chance encounters as the origin of the image. Inert figures, almost characters, emerge from ambiguous settings without clear context, generating an atmosphere of mystery and uncertainty. The incomprehensible becomes the poetic axis, and the scene remains open, without closing into narratives.

FOOTPRINTS OF THE PAST

This project focuses on the study of abandoned places. They are the scars of becoming. Emptied of human life, they are now filled with other content over time. The struggle between the natural and the artificial creates spaces full of the lyricism of the decadent, of beauty.

ON DARKNESS

Jorge Gallego explores the tension between the human need for clarity and the persistence of the unknown. Based on dark, fragmented, and introspective imagery, this series delves into the territory of the inexact, the ambiguous, and the essentially human: the fear of darkness, the search for meaning, the desire to understand the other, and the unease that emerges at the border between the intimate and the hostile. Light, in this series, is not absolutely revelatory: it barely touches forms, defines incomplete contours, casts shadows. Darkness is not just absence, but an active environment that distorts, hides, and transforms perception.

ON THE INTIMATE AND THE COLLECTIVE

In Jorge Gallego's work, the window appears as a recurring motif that functions as a link between the intimate and the collective. More than a simple architectural element, it is presented as a symbolic threshold between private space and the exterior landscape, charged with ambiguity and tension. Gallego uses the window as a metaphor for the limit, for contemplation, and for the silent exchange between the subject and its environment. From a contained and structural aesthetic, his pieces invite reflection on how we inhabit the world and how that world permeates us. The window, in this sense, is also an image of art: that which separates and at the same time connects.
