Iyán Castaño

Iyán Castaño is a Spanish visual artist specializing in printmaking, trained at the School of Arts of Oviedo and graduated in Fine Arts from the University of Bilbao. His artistic practice is developed in the field of experimental graphics, where printmaking expands beyond its traditional limits to dialogue with painting and other visual languages. Through this fusion, the artist explores concepts such as the ephemeral and the eternal, the vastness of the landscape, and the untamed beauty of nature. Castaño's creative process is built on a direct and physical relationship with the natural environment, which acts as the origin, support, and active collaborator of the work. His workspace has no borders: the artist intervenes canvases in contact with nature, allowing reliefs, textures, and imprints—from the seabed, tree bark, or organic surfaces—to be integrated into the final piece. In this way, his creations transcend the traditional notion of printmaking to become sensitive records of a shared action between the artist and the landscape. As he himself states, he does not create works about nature, but with it. In this gesture, Iyán Castaño brings us closer to a territory where human and natural creation merge into a single artistic expression. His works invite reflection on the constant transformation of the world we inhabit and on the fragility of existence, revealing a realm where the ephemeral and the eternal coexist in balance.

Sand ripples

Sand Ripples is a series by Iyán Castaño that originates from the ephemeral ripples the sea generates on the sand during low tide. Through a practice of experimental graphics that fuses engraving and painting, the artist works with nature as an active matrix, transferring to the support the reliefs and traces created by tides, currents, and waves. The series explores the tension between the ephemeral and the eternal, giving rise to rhythmic and silent surfaces that function as spaces of pause. Each work is presented as a frozen fragment of landscape, inviting the viewer to an intimate and attentive relationship with natural rhythms.

Estudio de una onda

Estudio de una onda (Study of a Wave) is a series of small-format works created in scenarios of instability and temporal pressure. They emerge at times when the tide rises rapidly or when wind and rain prevent working on a larger scale. Using nature as an active matrix, each piece maps ephemeral waves, captured before their disappearance. The series functions as an archive of extreme moments, where the gesture is precise and time is determinant. These works condense the energy of the ocean on an intimate scale, offering the viewer a direct and silent approach to natural rhythms.
